Q

If God has given you a clear direction for your life that involves another person (i.e. told you who you will marry) and that person doesn't surrender to God's will, can or will God change the direction He had set for you? Scripture to back up your answer would be appreciated.

A

It's up to you to decide if the person you want to marry is God's real choice for you, however, if there is doubt or fear move very cautiously. In the Bible when people were afraid and it really was God moving, the first thing Jesus or the angel said was, "fear not". If what you think really is God speaking to you then He will give you peace and joy that never goes away and will last forever, it's His miracle power at work. Pray for guidance and clearness of mind, don't let feelings get in the way of your thinking. Choosing a marriage partner is one of the most important things you will ever do! It can give you a lifetime of happiness or a life filled with sorrow, be wise in your choice.

If you are a true born-again Christian never, ever give thought to marry anyone who is not stable in the Lord. Even if they give their heart to the Lord they must have a growth period that will prove to you they are stable. Be patient, patient, patient, God has someone special for you and He will work things out if you give him time.

God's Word, The Holy Bible, is our highest authority and living by His standards will produce the very best in a person's life, not only in spiritual matters, but in the physical, mental, and material aspects of life as well. It is to our great benefit to research what He has said in his Word, and to live to the best of our ability according to the lessons we learn from it.

The following scriptures are reasons to be wise in moving slowly into any relationship.

1. 2 Corinthians 6:14-15 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? ... What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?

2. 1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be misled: "Bad company corrupts good character."

3. 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Although this last scripture was written for people given to sexual immorality, it shows us truths about our position in the Body of Christ. If we truly make Jesus lord over us, should we willingly submit our body, along with our spirit and soul to the influence of someone who rebels against God's will? That would be willful disobedience.

James 4:17 Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins.

If we don't do what we know to be right, then the action of not doing the right thing would be considered a willful sin against God; and that would severely damage our relationship with our Lord. We must repent and totally turn away from being willfully disobedient. However, even though repentance always makes things right with God, some willful sin will still create problems for a person throughout their lifetime. And a marriage mistake can affect the lives of their children and other family member around them. The scriptures tells us that Jesus always did what The Father (God) desired and we are to follow Him in this same way.

God knows you need a marital partner to love and be loved by. He knows all about you and cares about your every need so don't rush into anything. Let the Lord love you and you love him and the perfect mate will show up, ever so un-expectantly. It may be this one in a new godly nature or a different one that already lives in God's will, so be patient, and continue to seek God's direction.
